At The Why Books, we're passionate about sparking the curiosity of young learners. Our education brand is dedicated to promoting diverse representation in children's literature, because we believe that every child should have the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the stories they read.
In 2020, our founder Nathan Holder envisioned a world where children from all backgrounds could access engaging and inspiring books that celebrate diversity. That's why he created The Why Books, a platform that offers music resources and captivating storytelling that focuses on underrepresented communities.
At our core, we believe that every child deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories they read. Unfortunately, the statistics show that representation of Black and Brown individuals in children's books about music is severely lacking. In 2017, a study by the CLPE found that only 0.09% of these books featured characters from underrepresented communities.
These sobering numbers are why we're dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusivity in our work. We believe that by amplifying voices from all backgrounds, we can create a more equitable and just world. A more recent study in 2020 showed that only 0.58% of children's books were published by British men of colour, highlighting the urgent need for change.
