The world was saddened to hear about the death of Mary Wilson on the 8th Feb 2021 at the age of 76. She was a part of the original group which was started in 1959 (originally called The Primettes) and was the only one who stayed until the group stopped in 1977. No wonder Diana Ross called Mary 'the glue' of the band! The Supremes are one of the most successful vocal groups of all time with over 100 million records sold, and they have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Mary herself once said that 'I do think The Supremes showed the world that Black women were gorgeous, talented.' RIP
Stop! In The Name of Love is one of The Supremes' most famous hit songs. Mary Wilson is singing on the right.
If this performance was in 2021, what do you think would be different?
Do they sing in harmony or in unison?
Which instruments can you hear?
How can you tell where the chorus starts?
If the singer in the middle is the lead singer, what do you call the other singers?
Have a listen to her singing taking the lead on this song.
